Pregame meals and in-season diets are essential for athletes to provide them with the nutrition needed to continuously perform at a high level when on the court. But what if that meal consisted of 47 chicken wings?

For Cheap Alvan Adams Jersey, that seemed to be an easy feat that led to one of the greatest performances in NBA history.

After being named the 1975-76 Rookie of the Year, Adams continued to provide a dominant presence in the paint while also being one of the best distributing big men in his time. However, off the court, his teammates knew him for something else, an ultimate foodie with a limitless stomach.

“In general, Alvan had a big appetite and he was cheap,” teammate Cheap Paul Westphal Jersey said.

When the Suns used to go out to dinner in the 1970s, the bill was simply split evenly by however many people were dining. Unfortunately for everyone else, this made it all too easy for Adams to go above and beyond a normal serving size.

“Once Alvan understood that, he would always order more than everybody else,” Westphal said. “If someone else ordered two entrees, he’d order three. He could eat like nobody I’ve ever seen.”

The Suns visited Buffalo to tip-off against the Braves once a season and that one time meant that it was a necessity of Adams to dine at one of the most iconic chicken wing restaurants in the country, Frank & Teressa’s Anchor Bar – Home of the Original Buffalo Chicken Wings.

“We had heard of all these buffalo wings and it was legendary,” Westphal said. “Bill Russell used to send the trainer out in the snow in Buffalo to bring him back these wings from the Anchor Bar. So, Alvan went there and he just loved these wings.”

Not only did Adams love the Anchor Bar, but with the amount of wings Adams would order, it was pretty certain they loved him back.

“I would gladly eat chicken wings anytime at the Anchor Bar,” Alvan said. “We usually ate multiple dozens of chicken wings. So, three dozen, four dozen, I don’t remember exactly.”

On February 21, 1977, one night before their game against the Braves during his sophomore season, Adams went above and beyond what anyone could have imagined.

“Alvan ate 47 chicken wings,” Westphal said. “He loved them. He just kept eating. He wasn’t really trying to set a record. He was just hungry.”

While eating 47 wings in one sitting is already impressive, what he did the next night made it historic.

On February 22, 1977, Adams not only matched the Suns single-game record for points at the time, but also matched the number of wings he ate with a 47 points performance.

Adams did far more than merely score 47 points a night after eating 47 wings but added in a monstrous triple-double as well. The big man tallied 18 rebounds, 12 assists and five blocked shots, one shy of what would ultimately be the career highs in each category for his entire career.

“I look back at the stats and it says I scored 47 with a bunch of rebounds and a bunch of assists. I was like, ‘Who guarded me?’ Obviously, nobody,” Adams said. “Bob McAdoo was on that team. I always got worn out chasing him around. He didn’t play that game for some reason. Maybe he’s the one who ate the chicken wings and got sick.”

To put this performance into perspective, there have only been six games in NBA history where a player has recorded at least 45 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists, with four NBA MVPs accounting for the other five games (Oscar Robertson, Wilt Chamberlain, Larry Bird and James Harden twice). Of these, Adams is the only player since blocks became a stat (1971) to also record five blocks (Basketball-Reference).

Presumably, he is also the only player to also eat 47 hot wings the night before.

The deeper you dive into the metrics the more legendary the chicken wing game becomes. Game Score is a metric created by John Hollinger to roughly measure a player’s productivity for a single game. Basketball-Reference tracks Game Score dating back to 1983-84.

The Suns top ranked games include Cheap Devin Booker Jersey 70 point night (a score of 54.5), Cheap Charles Barkley Jersey 56 point playoff game vs the Warriors (52.6), Amar’e Stoudmire’s 49 point game against Indiana (50.2) and Cheap Tom Chambers Jersey 60-point performance against Seattle. There has only been a total of 24 performances by any NBA player with a game score above 50 since 1983, including these four by Suns.

While Adams’ Game Score cannot be calculated exactly as turnovers were not kept in the box score at the time, it would estimate to fall in the range of 48-53. Meaning, not only would it grade as one of the top performances in Suns history but would arguably be one of the top 25 most productive all-around games in NBA history.

Again, the night after eating 47 chicken wings.

But if 47 wings meant a 47-point triple-double, what could 50 wings equate to?

“We only played in Buffalo once a year,” Westphal said. “He couldn’t wait until the next year when we were going back to buffalo. He said, ‘I’m going to eat 50 wings.’ And he did. He ate 50 wings, got sick and couldn’t play the next game.”

However, this is not how Adams remembers this story going and he brought the facts to prove it.

“So, fact checking by Cole Mickelson, our in-house historian and archivist, verified my side of the story,” Adams said. “My side of the story is that I was hit with tonsillitis before Christmas in my third season. I missed three or four weeks including the week in Buffalo. I missed that game because I was not with the team because of tonsillitis.”

Even 40 years later, Westphal still isn’t buying it.

“There’s no way. He may have got it on a technicality. Maybe he missed a year. He ate 50 wings because he was going to go for it, but then he couldn’t play the next game. That is the true story.

While the 50-wing illness may have some disputes, the 47-wing game will continue to live on as one of the most legendary stories leading to one of the most historic performances in Suns history.

Tougher. Grittier. Nastier.

Kyle Lowry says Toronto needs to improve in those areas that have made the Raptors one of the NBA’s top teams in recent years – and it doesn’t stop there.

“We have no swag to us right now,” the All-Star guard said. “There’s nothing to us. Teams are looking at us like, alright, let’s go eat, and that’s not a good feeling and I think we have to use that and fuel our own fire.”

Seeing this as “unchartered territory,” the Raptors (1-5) can see things going from bad to worse as they start a four-game road trip Wednesday at Phoenix (5-2), at 7 p.m.

“Phoenix, they don’t give a damn what our record is,” Raptors guard Fred VanVleet said. “They’re going to try to punch us in the mouth. They’re going to try to kick our butts. Nobody is coming to save us. We’ve got to do this ourselves.”

The Raptors are coming off a126-114 loss Monday to Boston. They’ve blown double-digit leads in their five defeats.

Having made the playoffs the last seven seasons and won an NBA title in 2019, Toronto isn’t used to struggles like this.

“Probably do a little soul searching and look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself what each individual can do better to help contribute to the team,” VanVleet continued. “Go out there and figure out ways to win.”

While the Raptors could be a dangerous opponent looking to get back to their winning ways, Phoenix is focused on itself.

“Our challenge is us,” Suns coach Monty Williams said. “We just lost a game also that we felt like we could’ve won. We’re no different than Toronto. They’re desperate. We’ve played with an urgency and desperation every night. Our challenge is to play to our standard and not base what we do on what another team is feeling.”

Phoenix is coming off an 112-107 loss Sunday to the Los Angeles Clippers that snapped its four-game winning streak. The Suns were down by as many as 31 points in the first half before shrinking the lead to a point early in the fourth quarter in the eventual loss.

“We didn’t necessarily get stops when we needed to and execute the way that we’re capable of, but we gave ourselves a chance,” Suns guard Cheap Chris Paul Jersey said.

As bothersome as that loss was, Phoenix doesn’t have a “boatload” of problems like VanVleet says Toronto has.

One of them is on-ball defense.

“It used to be one of our strengths when we really guarded penetration well and we’re not guarding it very well right now.” said Nick Nurse, the 2019-20 NBA Coach of the Year, whose Raptors were 13th in defensive rating and points allowed per game going into Tuesday’s action.

Another problem is rebounding.

Ranked 27th in defensive rebounding, Toronto was outrebounded, 56-37, Monday. VanVleet led the Raptors in boards with seven despite being several inches shorter than Boston’s starting center Cheap Aron Baynes Jersey and reserve big Cheap Alex Len Jersey.

Not only did the two former Suns not score, Baynes had only one rebound in 14 minutes while Len collected just two in nine. Boston grabbed 12 offensive rebounds as Toronto is allowing 11 offensive boards a game.

“We’ve got to play better man,” said Nurse about the team as a whole. “We got to get these guys to play to their capabilities. I think they’re better players than that.”

After averaging career highs in points (11.5 per game) and 3-shooting (35.1%) last season as a backup center in Phoenix, Baynes is averaging just 6.2 points and shooting just 20% from 3 through six games this season.

“Aron is a guy that can do a lot of things on the floor,” said Williams about Baynes, who is averaging a career-high 5.8 rebounds this season. “He can pass, he can shoot it. Defensively, he draws charges. He was one of the best in the league last year, especially at his position, doing that. We learned a lot being around Aron.”

Toronto is facing unique circumstances as it’s relocated to Tampa for the 2020-21 season due to COVID-19-related travel restrictions in Canada. VanVleet is concerned about the mental health of the team, but said the Raptors have to get through it.

The Suns played their first game in a week and dropped an extremely winnable game, 108-104, to a depleted Memphis team in a loss that could haunt them later in the season.

Prior to tipoff, we learned Monty Williams made an adjustment to the Suns starting lineup by plugging in Cam Johnson for Jae Crowder, which is likely to be the big talking point coming out of the game aside from Devin Booker’s poor shooting night.

First Half
It was an understandably slow (and sloppy) start to the game as Phoenix looked to find its’ rhythm in the first 4 minutes or so, but after an Ayton throw down and Paul bullet pass to Bridges in transition that led to a Memphis timeout they looked more settled in.

Jevon Carter and Cheap Frank Kaminsky Jersey combined for three quick 3 pointers off the bench which led to a Memphis timeout yet again. Cheap Devin Booker Jersey really struggled in his first 10 minute stint, going 1-for-7 with 1 turnover and a technical foul. The first quarter was finished strong after a pair of triples from Cheap Jevon Carter Jersey and Chris Paul to close the quarter with the Suns leading Memphis 24 to 18. The Suns did a magnificent job on Morant in the 1st quarter, holding him scoreless on 0-3 shooting with 3 turnovers.

Chris Paul and Cheap Deandre Ayton Jersey hooked up for a nice pick and roll alley oop that many Suns fans envisioned they’d see a lot more frequently this season.

The Suns really struggled to find any consistency throughout the first half, as they would rely on a few hot streaks to keep them afloat after many cold stretches. Booker was mostly nonexistent and a negative impact in the 1st half, and they were held together through the strong play of Deandre Ayton and the bench’s strong three point shooting. Heading into the half the Suns trailed Memphis 52-48 after leading by as many as 10 points.

Second Half
Phoenix struggled mightily to start the third quarter as they tried to force feed Deandre Ayton which led to choppy game play and a series of carless turnovers. Cheap Jae Crowder Jersey hit a couple threes to keep them hanging around midway through the quarter.

Deandre Ayton had (in my opinion) the most impressive dunk of his career that really shifted the momentum of the game.

The defensive intensity for both teams picked up quite a bit towards the end of the third quarter with a lot of long possessions late in the shot clock from both teams. Heading into the 4th and final quarter Memphis led by a pair with the score sitting at 77-75.

The start of the 4th quarter had a better flow offensively for both clubs as it went back and forth, trading buckets quickly. Cheap Chris Paul Jersey started to play bit more aggressive hitting a couple mid-range jumpers and Cam Johnson drilled two threes to start the quarter off.

Phoenix pulled ahead by 6 points after a Cam Payne three and Cheap Mikal Bridges Jersey transition drive after a missed dunk by Brandon Clarke.

After Memphis cut the lead down to 2, Jae Crowder made an excellent pass on a cut by Mikal Bridges who had a chance to make a three point play by missed the free throw.

Booker missed a dunk and then a three pointer on consecutive possessions which allowed Memphis to recapture the lead at 101-98 after he left Grayson Allen wide open. A series of unfortunate events. They made one last push at the end after a Mikal Bridges three, but Grayson Allen sealed the deal at the free throw line and it was too little too late.

Star of the Game
Deandre Ayton: 18 points, 16 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 block on 7-of-14 shooting.

Despite the loss, this was by my favorite offensive game from Ayton this season due to how he scored his points. He completed a season-high of 5 dunks, including a couple posters and made a couple assertive moves off the dribble that got him to the charity stripe. He also controlled the game on the glass, making a ton of winning plays when they needed him most. If only the rest of the team showed up.
